This morning, as I was reading Genesis Chapters 23 & 24…there was a verse that caught my attention.
Genesis 24:1 NIV
Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.
The Bible describes Abraham like this,” the Lord had blessed him in every way.” Later in the same chapter, v35, we find a similar phrase. “The Lord has blessed my master abundantly,…” this is spoken by Eliezer, the Senior Servant of Abraham.
In Short, the Bible defines Abraham as a man whom God had blessed. A man who was prospered by God. Now, What was it about Abraham that caused God to bless him? Was he special? Was he so unique that he was blessed by God? No. Nothing. But Abraham had certain qualities that caused God to prosper him.
Two qualities of Abraham
- He Believed in God
- He Depended on God
He believed in what God had promised and he depended on God in every circumstance. If you study the life of Abraham, he was quite well off. However, he did not depend on what he already had but depended on God. He relied on God. He believed in the Promises, the word that God had spoken. As a result, He was more blessed than before. In Verse 35, Eliezer says, The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.
The challenge we often face is, that, when our income begins to grow, when we begin to experience some personal achievements, we feel as though we’ve made…and slowly our dependency on God fades away, and faith begins to take a back seat. But what we see in the life of Abraham is, in spite of all that he possessed, he still believed and still depended.
May we always believe and always depend on God. Then, like Abraham, we also might be prospered by God.
I think that’s a great title to have: <Your Name>, Prospered by God. Joshua, Prospered by God.
Let’s Pray
Lord, take away everything that comes in the way of believing in you, and depending on you. Help us to imitate the qualities that Abraham. We want to be known as the one who is prospered by You. In Jesus Name. Amen.
