John 14:23-24
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.  Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. –

When I was saved, I felt like I had cracked the code. I felt like, this is it. I’ve got this. Felt like an enlightened being. That feeling didn’t last for long, though. Grace. Forgiveness. Renewal. These words are at the heart of what we believe. We might think that we have understood what it means when we hear the Gospel and put our faith in Jesus. Sadly, it is not so.

If you’ve been in evangelistic meetings or many times even in your church, the preacher might’ve thrown in Rev. 3:20 as an appeal to the unconverted to put their faith in Jesus.

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” This verse is followed by a very popular call, “Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart. If you open the door, then He will come in.” When you look at the verse in context, Jesus directs those words to the church. It’s not an evangelistic call.

Seek God

So what are we looking at? We saw that a hardened heart has no affection for the things of God. The point is that unbelievers do not actively seek God on their own. Unbelievers won’t seek. Unbelievers won’t knock on doors. The activity of seeking belongs to believers. Jonathan Edwards, an American theologian, said, “The seeking of the Kingdom of God is the chief business of the Christian life.” Seeking isn’t the cause for our faith; it’s the result of our faith.

You might’ve heard in people’s testimonies where they go into detail about their unconverted life and at the turning point they add, “…and then I found Jesus!”. Yes, at conversion we do find Jesus. It’s all true. When you’re searching for your mobile phone, you stop searching for it once you find it, right? But when you’re seeking God, your search begins when you have found Jesus.

To summarize all of it, the Christian life doesn’t end at conversion. We’re just getting started.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, kill any pride that is in us, which is keeping us from knowing you more. We know that even on the day that we breathe our last, we wouldn’t have known even an iota of who you truly are. Help us to deepen our understanding of you. Help us to continually seek you with our renewed hearts. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
