In First Timothy 4:14,
Paul writes to Timothy saying, “Do not Neglect your Gift.” Perhaps this is a word that we need to hear today. Because so often we set aside the gifts that God has given and pursue something else that is not meant for us. We must check to see if we are pursuing that gift or pursuing the call God has given us.
1 Timothy 4:14 NIV
14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
I have read this passage several times but as I read this morning, I felt as if I am reading this for the first and I felt inspired to share this with you.
1 Timothy is a letter written by a Senior Pastor to a Junior Pastor. the Senior Pastor is Paul and Junior Pastor is Timothy. In this, He outlines certain instructions, one of them is, “Do not Neglect your Gift”
There are three reasons we may neglect our gift:
- My Gift is not that Important – No One Really Needs it.
- We feel shy, or hesitant to use our gifts
- Maybe I am not gifted at all.
Those might be our inhibitions, but I want to know something, If God gives us a gift, we have to put it to use.
Jesus tells a story of three men who were given bags of Gold
- The first person was given five bags of gold
- The second was given Two bags of gold
- The third was given one bag of gold
The one who received five earned 5 more
The one who received two earned two more
But the third person who had just one bad did not do anything. But he buried it in the ground.
The result of that is he was thrown into darkness. This man failed to even do the bare minimum with what was given to him.
I wonder, what gifts do you have?
Are you using or have you buried it?
Do not neglect your gifts, use them for the glory of God.
Let’s Pray
Lord, Help us to be good stewards of the gifts that you have given to me. Take away the inhibitions, laziness, or anything that keeps us from using the gifts. Help us, Lord, In Jesus’ name.
