There’s one thing that can destroy your relationship…i.e. “Taking people for granted”

This is what the Bible says,

Philippians 2:3 NIV
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

When a person is selfish or narcissistic, it is very likely they will take the other person for granted and use them for their own selfish benefit. When this happens, relationships begin to break down or marriages are destroyed.

The Bible calls us to do nothing. I mean nothing out of selfish ambition, why does it say? Selfish ambitions cause people to be taken for granted. This is dangerous. Here’s why

Three things happen when people are taken for granted. To understand this better, I’ll share this in the context of marriage.

  1. If the Husband takes his wife for granted, He will ignore the value she adds to his life.
  2. If the Husband takes his wife for granted, He stops earning his wife’s trust. Trust is one thing that needs to be earned every day by displaying love, commitment, and sacrifice but when the spouse is taken for granted, trust begins to fade away.
  3. Finally, If the husband takes his wife for granted. He becomes ungrateful. He is no longer grateful to God for bringing him a spouse because instead of seeing them as a gift from God they are now seen as a commodity that exists for their selfish desires.

This can happen the other way where the wife can take the husband for granted.

Such attitudes can kill our relationship.

In the friendships that we have, or in our marriage we must ask, Am I taking them for granted? or Am I treating them with respect and dignity?

Let’s pray.

Father, Help us to value others above ourselves and do nothing out of selfish ambition. Forgive us for we have failed. Help us to recover. In Jesus’ name.
