Called to be a Missionary

Listen to this Devotion

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” – Matthew 4:19

Most of us believe that missions is something that other people do. Those who spread the message of our Lord Jesus Christ boldly across the world. But have we considered that were all called to do the same? We have come to believe that while God calls each of us into His Kingdom, only a select few are chosen to carry out His mission. Well, nothing could be further from the truth.,

In Matthew 4:19, Jesus declared “follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people”. Contrary to popular belief, His invitation to participate in His mission is entwined with His invitation to salvation. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we should all pack our bags and leave for an uncharted island far off. It implies that the invitation to follow Christ includes a call to share His message wherever He leads us. It implies that God has a mission for everyone, whether they are college students, stay-at-home moms, or international missionaries.

In India, we often worry about the direction our nation is taking when we observe our society. Among the communal tensions and all the havoc, we need to perceive something bigger here. We’re looking at a society in desperate need of the gospel’s light. This presents an opportunity for us to carry out the great commission in our own house. Either we can grab the opportunity, or we can withdraw in fear.

According to Hebrews 10:39, “we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed but to those who have faith and are saved.”

Let’s regain this assurance and go from shrinking to sharing. Let’s take the first step by changing our attitude toward missions. You are a missionary and wherever God has placed you today, that’s your mission field.

Let’s pray,

Lord, I want to know You and make You known to the world. Lead me and equip me to be the missionary that You want me to be. Amen.
