Witnessing to Authority

Witnessing to Authority

Listen to Audio Devotion

1 Peter 2:20
If you suffer for doing good, and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

Have you been in a position where you know that a senior person in authority is wrong, but you still have to put up with what they’re saying, or doing only because they’re senior? This is a very common situation in everyone’s life. You are put down just because you’re not old enough, or not in their shoes. This can happen anywhere; at your house, in your workplace, in the church, basically anywhere you find a hierarchical system. When I was a part of the NCC, we had 2 rules. Rule No. 1 reads, “Seniors are always right.” And Rule No. 2 read, “If in doubt, refer to rule no. 1”. This mindset is also engrained in the Indian culture; to respect elders, listen to what they say, and not talk back.

But this authority is sometimes used to mock, annoy, and mistreat people as well. You may not be facing this right now, but you must be ready when this occasion comes up. Why? Because it’s necessary for advancing the kingdom. We are told to submit “to every human authority” (1 Pet. 2:13) and that’s what we’re supposed to do. But, maintaining integrity in tough situations is not easy. However, notice that Peter gives a good reason to endure – “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 Pet. 2:12). Not just that, we’ll also be able to set an example for the Christians who are watching.

But then, if things get too nasty and abusive, it would be best to leave. If it’s a manageable, safe environment, with the Spirit’s help, we can suffer for doing good and endure the trials, for it is commendable before God. How are you managing such situations today? Let’s ask God for the help we need.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, despite the challenging circumstances I might encounter, please help me to always respond to those in authority in a way that honors You. Assist me in living each day to Your glory. In Jesus Name. Amen.
