John 14:26 NIV
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Often this passage is misinterpreted to mean that the holy spirit will teach all things, and there is no need for bible teachers or any need to attend seminary. Anyone who takes such a view of scriptures is committing the grave mistake of misinterpreting scriptures because that is not what this passage talks about. John chapters 14, 15, 16, and 17 are known to be Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples before he was crucified, that is why 18, talks about Jesus being arrested. The Disciples were emotional at this point because they left everything to follow him but now after 3.5 years, Jesus was going to leave them. So, Jesus comforts them saying, I will send a helper, the Holy Spirit who will teach all things.
Why does he say that ?!
- First, the disciples did not fully understand why Jesus had to be crucified. In Matthew 16:22 (NIV), Peter opposed Jesus’ crucifixion. However, when the Holy Spirit comes he will help them understand why Jesus had to be crucified and later rise again. This happened in Acts 2:22-25 (NIV), the same Peter who opposed now speaks boldly about why Jesus had to die.
- Second, when the Holy Spirit came, He would bring to their remembrance everything Jesus had taught them, enabling them to write down and share His message with the world.. This happened later when the few of the disciples wrote down books containing the teachings and ministry of Jesus.
