One of the best pieces of advice I received was from my dad and this is what he said… He said, “Do not allow guilt to rule your life.” In other words, don’t allow the mistakes of the past to rule your life.
I used to be the kind of person who would feel guilty for what I did. Even if I prayed and asked God for forgiveness. I would still feel so guilty. Sometimes this feeling of Guilt can be so strong, that even if God forgave me, I still would not be able to forgive myself for what I did.
Over the years, I have met people who dealt with feelings of extreme guilt that they would fast and pray, and attend meetings in the hope that this guilt would be taken away!
But here’s the good news!! The moment you come to Jesus and confess your sins — your guilt, and shame is completely taken away. We are no longer the same person who committed that mistake but we are made new in Christ.
But the reason we feel so guilty is because the enemy uses the memories of the past to remind us that we have committed a sin that is so big that God will not forgive. What he does is he minimizes the power of God’s forgiveness and maximizes the feelings of guilt and shame. So, when we feel guilty, it’s not because God cannot forgive… God has already forgiven.. but we feel guilty because the enemy has convinced us that our sin is so big that God cannot forgive.
There are beautiful verses in the scriptures that I would like to remind you.
- Romans 8:1 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
- Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
- 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
- Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, let us settle the matter. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”
- Hebrews 8:12 – “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
That’s who our God is, “He will not remember our sins.”
Do not let guilt rule your life. You are no longer a sinner but you are forgiven and set free from your past.
Let’s Pray
Lord, we pray that you help us understand that you have removed our transgressions, and have made us new in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen
